The session will focus on the multi-faceted web-based education resources for building a culture of human rights and respect in every classroom. Educators will be presented with free resources, and engaged in activities and discussion that foster a culturally diverse and respectful environment. The session will also serve as an introduction to the 2008 NWSISD summer curriculum writing academy.

The 2007 Summer Multicultural Curriculum Writing Academy, a program of the NWSISD MRC, was an opportunity for teachers to learn about human rights and acquire practical skills in developing human rights curricula. Participants used the online This is My Home Curriculum Planning tool to develop a human rights curriculum units relevant to their subject area and student grade level.
Goals:
- To Introduce the Concept of Human Rights and Human Rights Education;
- To Introduce and Involve Participants in Using This is My Home Online Multi-media Tools;
- To Build a Team of Human Rights Educators;
- To Enhance Educators' Skills in Creating Culturally Inclusive Learning Environments;
- To Develop or EnhanceHuman Rights Curriculum-Building Skills;
- To Develop Curriculum Units/ Lesson Plans.

Educators of the Northwest Suburban Integration
School District (NWSISD) were invited to attend the Summer Human
Rights Curriculum Writing Academy, June 26-27, 2006. This was
an opportunity for teachers to learn how to develop human rights
curriculum and provide practical lessons in civic engagement
and global citizenship.Participants developed a human rightslesson
plan that is relevant to their subject area and student grade
level.

On July 28-31, 2008, eight educators took part in the Human Rights Curriculum Writing Academy sponsored by the General Mills Comminities of Color Grant. For four days they worked together with facilitators to develop their own curriculum units based on their target audiences and interests. The resulting units focused on such topics as food justice, anti-bullying, a harassment- free workplace and others. GOALS:
- to introduce the concept of human rights and human rights education;to introduce and involve participants in using This is My Home online multi-media tools;to enhance educators' skills in creating culturally inclusive learning environments;to develop or enhance human rights curriculum-building skills;to develop curriculum units/ lesson plans;
